Academic work
Teaching is one of the best things we
ever did. We claim to be good at it, but that is not the point. Some of the
brightest minds happen to move about in universities and research institutes.
The interaction with students, fellow teachers and other academics and experts
is extremely enriching. We probably never learned as much as through teaching.
Teaching unavoidably trains you to be critical, quick and objective in assessing ideas, issues and design projects. It forces one to prioritize issues, to be clear about one’s opinions and to argue and explain one’s position in understandable terms. It is much easier to see mistakes, omissions and problems in other people’s work than in one's own. In practice, one hardly finds time to reflect on achieved projects. Our ongoing teaching and research in academic environments, however, improves our practice considerably -- and vice-versa.
